It is easy to see why Philodendron Sodiroi is a sought-after and pricey variety. In the right conditions, this plant grows rapidly will make you look like an expert philodendron grower. It is a climbing variety that will grow wider than tall, so make space for this pricey beauty in your home. Its gorgeous two-tone heart-shaped leaves will be a striking addition to the collection of any Philodendron lover.

Philodendron Sodiroi is also known as Sodiroi Ornatum Silver. It is a rare and expensive climbing variety of Philodendrons that can reach an impressive size when provided with a moss pole. The foliage has a glossy shine and features dark green leaves with distinctive silver patterning.

Like most Philodendrons, Sodiroi thrives as a low-maintenance houseplant. The most difficult part of owning a Sodiroi is where to acquire one. If you are lucky enough to find one for sale, the price tag for this unusual silver gem can be anywhere upwards of $100.  Keeping your Sodiroi healthy will be richly rewarded with vigorous growth that will be a showpiece in your home.

About Philodendron Sodiroi

Like all houseplants, Philodendrons rely on us to meet their basic light, water, soil, and fertilizer requirements. These tropical plants that originated in the rain forests of French Guiana live naturally below large rainforest trees. They use the trees as support to reach higher and closer to the light source at the top of the canopy.

You can encourage Sodiroi’s vigorous climbing growth by providing a suitable moss pole that it can use for support while growing. A healthy plant can reach 4ft in height and equally wide, so make sure you have a spacious spot waiting for this tropical beauty.  There are plenty of extendable options that will be perfect for displaying your Sodiroi as it grows available on Amazon.

Before you invest in a Soliroi, remember that, like most members of the Philodendron family, the plant is toxic. Chewing or ingesting the foliage can lead to severe allergic reactions and swelling of the mouth, lips, and throat. This large impressive plant will, in all likelihood, need to stand on the floor. It may not be the correct plant choice if you have young children or inquisitive pets unless you can keep it well out of reach.

One of the most rewarding things about Sodiroi is that it can grow between 1 – 3 feet during the growing season when it is kept in favorable conditions. Adding another tier to your moss pole to support new growth can make owning one of these spectacular climbing plants very satisfying.

Keeping your Sodiroi healthy once you have one may be easier than actually finding a healthy plant to buy. Philodendrons are generally easy to keep, and if you have other varieties, it will not be a challenge.

Sodiroi is more sensitive to light and requirements than any other aspects when it comes to basic care. These are listed first and should be considered a top priority if you own one of these rare Philodendrons.

Light Requirements of Philodendron Sodiroi

The best thing for any Philodendron is to try to imitate its natural environment. The Sodiroi in the wild can be found at the base of large trees in the rainforest. They develop aerial roots to climb tree trunks to reach the dappled sunlight that comes through the canopy.

The ideal lighting conditions for Sodiroi is bright but indirect sunlight. They can be placed near a window that receives good light but be sure to keep them away from the sun’s direct rays because the large leaves can easily get scorched.

You may have to experiment when positioning your Sodiroi for a while before you find the perfect spot. If it gets too little light, its growth rate will be stunted. If it receives too much light, the leaves can become brown and burned. If you have a sunny window that lets in too much direct sunlight, you can add a screen or thin curtain to filter the incoming sharp rays.

Watering Your Philodendron Sodiroi

Philodendron plants love being watered, but overwatering will quickly kill them if root rot sets in. It is best to water the Sodiroi thoroughly but then allow the upper part of the soil to dry out completely before drenching it again.

You will need to water it approximately twice a week in summer, depending on how quickly the soil dries out. In winter, you can reduce watering to every two to three weeks. Be sure to use room temperature water as cold or warm water can shock the plant.

You can use your index finger to feel the top of the soil to check if it is dry before you apply water to your Sodiroi. However, if you have invested in such a pricey and rare plant, it is worth purchasing a soil moisture meter to take the guesswork out of watering your precious plant.

Soil and Potting Requirements of Philodendron Sodiroi

Most garden centers have specifically formulated aroid soil mixes that contain all the nutrients needed by philodendrons. The soil should be well-draining and light. Although you may purchase your plant as a small pot plant with two or three leaves, it will develop aerial roots and climb as it grows.

Soil should never be compact or stodgy, but it must be dense and rich in nutrients. Think about the soil on a tropical forest floor beneath a canopy of trees. You can mix your own potting material by adding perlite, peat moss, orchid bark, coarse sand, or compost to a good quality regular potting soil.

Plant your Sodiroi in a big pot that allows it to expand in size quickly without becoming pot bound. While they can be grown in hanging baskets, they do well and look impressive when planted in a large pot and provided with a moss pole to climb. In ideal conditions, they can reach 4ft in height.

Philodendron Sodiroi Fertilizer Requirements

Sodiroi will appreciate regular, moderate fertilizing, so setting up a schedule is recommended. This will eliminate haphazard timing, which can lead to under or over-fertilizing your precious plant.

Through the growing season, which is Spring and Summer, the plant should be fertilized every six weeks. This should not be exceeded, or it may lead to excessive salt build-up in the soil, increasing the overall ph of the growing medium.

Ensure that the liquid fertilizer that you choose is appropriate for indoor potted plants. Then dilute it according to the directions on the label. Rather use a mixture that is too weak than risk burning your Soldiroi’s roots.

Temperature Requirements of Philodendron Sodiroi

Sodiroi, like all plants in the Philodendron family, are not cold tolerant. The ideal temperature range is between 65 and 85F.

Ensure that the temperature never drops below 60F or the plant will not cope. Keep your Sodiroi away from cold air vents and doors that allow icy drafts to come through.

Humidity Requirements of Philodendron Sodiroi

Philodendron Sodiroi loves humidity, but it is not a deal-breaker. If it receives enough light and is watered correctly, it is tolerant of much lower humidity levels than one would expect from a tropical plant.

The ideal humidity level for most Philodendrons is around 80%, which is much higher than anyone could live comfortably. If you live in a dry area, you can increase the humidity around the plant by using a pebble tray or grouping other plants with your Sodiroi.

You can also mist your Sodiroi every few days during the warmer months. Just ensure the water you use is room temperature, or it could leave marks on the lovely leaves.

Propagation of Philodendron Sodiroi

If you can get your parent plant growing well, you can easily grow more valuable plants from the original. The best time to propagate your Sodiroi is from the middle of spring until mid-summer. This is when the plant is at its most active growing phase, and new plants will grow readily from stem cuttings.

The best way to propagate Sodiroi is by using stem cuttings. This is how you do it:

  • Use a sharp knife to cut a piece off the stem, at least 5 inches or longer. The cutting must have at least three healthy leaves.
  • You can either plant the cutting into a moist, fast-draining potting mix or place it in a jar of water. If your cutting is in water, be sure to change the water every two days.
  • Place the cutting in a light, warm position.
  • If you planted it directly in soil, ensure that the soil never dries out, but it also must be drenched. Use a spray bottle with a fine nozzle to water the soil if you think you may add too much water.
  • After three to four weeks, you should observe new growth. If your cutting was in water, plant it in the soil when you observe new growth.

Philodendron Sodiroi Pests and Diseases

Pests are less likely to be problematic to your plant’s health than issues caused by overwatering or keeping your Sodiroi in incorrect lighting conditions.

Philodendrons may get infected by gnats, scale, mealybug, whiteflies, or spider mites, but these pests can easily be eliminated using neem oil or a plant insecticide suitable for indoor use.

A common and very serious problem is root rot caused by overwatering or keeping it in a pot that does not have enough drainage holes. If your plant starts yellowing and looking sickly and you suspect that it may have received too much water, immediately remove it from its current pot, cut off as much of the damaged, mushy material as possible and plant it in fresh soil. Root rot is usually fatal once it sets in, but Sodiroi is a valuable plant, so it is worth trying to save it.

If the plant does not get enough sunlight, it will grow slowly, and leaves may become slightly yellow. Too much light, on the other hand, could burn the Sodiroi’s deep green and silver leaves, and they will become brown.

The most difficult part about owning a Philodendron Sodiroi will be finding the perfect position in your home where you can show it off. This large creeping variety with unusual green and silver-flecked leaves is not difficult to care for, so long as its most basic requirements in terms of light and watering are met. Once you have acquired one of these rare, fast-growing plants, it will provide you with many years of impressive growth.
